Alert! New I-9 Form Issued

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has issued an updated version of the Form I-9 for new hire verification of identity and employment authorization. The new form is dated “Rev. 10/21/2019” and is now available for use by employers. Employers may continue using the prior version of Form I-9 (Rev. 07/17/2017 N) until April 30, 2020.

Employers do not need to complete the new Form I-9 for current employees who already have a properly completed Form I-9 on file, unless reverification applies. Unnecessary verification may actually subject an employer to liability. The new form should be used only for new hires or reverifications.

The changes to the form are relatively minor and include: clarification of who can act as an authorized representative on behalf of an employer; updated USCIS website addresses; acceptable document clarifications; updated process for requesting the paper Form I-9; and updated DHS Privacy Notice.
