President Obama Orders DOL to Broaden Overtime Eligibility and Narrow Exemptions for "White Collar" Employees

Earlier today, President Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to update its overtime pay regulations, in particular those pertaining to the so-called "white collar" overtime exemptions for salaried executives, professionals and administrative employees, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). In a related press release, President Obama summarized his belief that millions of salaried workers have been left without the protections of overtime given the broad application of the "white collar" exemptions and the related low minimum salary requirement, which has only been updated twice in the last forty years.

In a posting on "Work in Progress," the official blog of the DOL, Secretary Tom Perez explained that the President's actions were part of his "vision of opportunity for all" and demonstrates the President's commitment "to making sure hard work is rewarded with fair wages."
